Course Requirements : Take the provided pretest, read the book “The Enduring Sense of Self in People with Alzheimer’s Disease” by Sam Fazio, and take the provided post test . You may e-mail, mail or fax your materials to DH Special Services. Once the materials are received and a passing grade is determined, your certificate will be e-mailed to you with a hard copy mailed to you.

Course Content: The reading will introduce the student to the definitions and importance of self-illustrated through research and literature. The text introduces a humanistic and individualized approach toward the concept of self and perceived “loss of self” associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Environmental and social elements of person centered caregiver approaches are outlined and discussed. The reading promotes a shift in attitude and a greater understanding of the importance of maintaining a sense of personhood in dementia care.
